Wi-Fi security: what your router can and can’t do
When we talk about cyber security at home, it is easy to focus only on accounts and devices. Your home network matters too. But it is important to be clear about what a router upgrade can and cannot do.
Your router is part of the picture
A router manages connections between your devices and the internet and forms a central part of your home network. Keeping network equipment appropriately configured and supported is one part of maintaining a secure digital environment.
But a new router does not replace basic security
You should still keep devices and software updated, use strong unique passphrases, enable MFA where available, back up important information and stay alert to scams and phishing.
Why an older router is worth checking
Technology changes. Older hardware may not support newer Wi-Fi standards or capabilities, and it may no longer suit a household that has accumulated more devices or changed the way it uses the internet.
So, should you upgrade?
Not necessarily. Start by checking your current router, its age and Wi-Fi generation, and how your household uses the connection.
