Is Your Router Outdated? 5 Things to Check

Most of us think about our internet connection in terms of the plan we pay for. But your router also plays an important role in how devices connect around your home. If your household has changed or your router has been around for a while, October is a good time to check whether your setup still suits you.

1. How old is your router?

If you cannot remember when you got it, that is a useful starting point. Older hardware may not support the same Wi-Fi standards and features as newer routers.

2. How many devices are connected?

Phones, laptops, TVs, consoles, cameras, smart speakers and other connected devices all add to the demands on a home network.

3. What Wi-Fi generation does it use?

Wi-Fi technology has evolved through generations including Wi-Fi 4, 5, 6 and 7. Newer generations can bring improvements in capacity and performance when compatible devices are used.

4. Are there areas of your home where Wi-Fi struggles?

Dead spots and inconsistent coverage can have several causes, including the router’s position, building materials, interference and the hardware itself. A router upgrade is not automatically the answer, but it can be worth investigating.

5. Does your setup still match the way you use the internet?

A router that suited a small household a few years ago may not be the right fit after adding more devices, streaming, gaming or working from home.

Start with a check, not a guess

You do not need to replace your router just because it is older. The better first step is to understand your current setup and what your household actually needs.
