6 Simple Cyber-Security Checks to Do at Home This October
Cyber security can sound complicated. But for most households, there are a few straightforward things you can check right now. October is Cyber Security Action Month, so it’s a useful time to spend a few minutes checking the digital basics.
1. Update your devices
Phones, laptops, tablets, smart TVs and other connected devices can all need software updates. Keep automatic updates switched on where available and install updates when prompted.
2. Check your important accounts
Start with your email, banking, shopping and social accounts. Make sure you are not reusing the same password or passphrase across important services.
3. Turn on MFA
Multi-factor authentication gives your accounts an additional layer of protection. If an account offers MFA, it is worth switching it on — particularly for your email and other accounts containing valuable personal information.
4. Back up your important files
Think about the things you would hate to lose: photos, documents, work files or other important information. Keep a backup somewhere separate from the device itself.
5. Pause before you click
Scam messages often rely on urgency. Before clicking a link or opening an attachment, check the sender and think about whether the request makes sense. When in doubt, go directly to the organisation’s website or app rather than following the link in the message.
6. Check your home network
Your router sits at the centre of your home network. Take a moment to think about when you bought or received it, which Wi-Fi generation it uses and whether it still suits your household.
If you have added more devices, started working from home, taken up gaming or simply noticed that your home Wi-Fi is struggling in some areas, it may be worth checking your setup.
